The art of albums

2 01 2009

I was hanging with my uncle on Christmas night, and he took me to the old band room. The place where my cousin (his son) and I would jam for hours working on new songs, set lists, and what ever else we were digging that day.

Well, it has now been converted into an office loft with some cool wall art. In honor of the old band days, he dragged out some of his best albums from back in the day.

In the day when albums were works of art. They were collectively a work of art from the songs, to the sequence, to the album packaging. It all worked together to capture a theme/vibe, an era.

We have entered a new era of music. Albums aren’t really in full production anymore. The single reigns supreme, and the power is in the peoples hand. You still have some limited run, collectors edition LP records….but they are few and far between. Who actually goes to retail anymore these days? Can you name the last time you bought a physical music product in a store?

While audiophiles will keep the high-end record players in business…and the specialty record pressings available online for orders…It’s sad to see the art of album making days go. But they sure do make good wall art…check out some classics below,
