Love for the Cross

2 12 2009

This chapter will resonate in my head this weekend as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper in my church. A hard snapshot of so many in the church today, which starts with me…I fall short in so many ways. I’m thankful for a God who is patient and desires to strengthen and grow me into the footsteps of His Son.

How Few Love The Cross of Jesus
“Jesus now has many who love His heavenly kingdom,
but few who bear His Cross.

He has many who desire comfort,
but few who desire tribulation.

He finds many companions at His table,
but few who fast often.

All desire to rejoice with Him,
but few are willing to suffer anything for Him–or with Him.

Many follow Jesus into the breaking of bread,
but few to the drinking of the cup of His suffering.

Many revere His miracles,
but few follow the humiliation of His Cross.

Many love Jesus,
so long as adversities do not happen to them.

Many praise and bless Him,
so long as they receive comfort from Him.

But if Jesus hides His presence and leaves them for even a little while,
they either start complaining or become depressed.”
Thomas Kempis from his book, “The Imitation of Christ”
